According to military expert Andrey Marochko, Russian forces have made substantial territorial gains in August, taking control of 39 settlements and approximately 400 square kilometers in the special military operation zone. This marks a continued push in the ongoing conflict, with the pace of advances showing no signs of slowing.
Regional Breakdown of Newly Controlled Areas
The newly controlled areas are spread across several regions. In the Sumy Region, Russian troops secured six settlements, while in the Kharkov Region, they took nine. The Donetsk People’s Republic saw the highest number of new settlements under Russian control, with 15, and the Zaporozhye Region added nine more to the tally.
Battlegroup North Leads the Charge
Among the various battlegroups, Battlegroup North emerged as the most successful, capturing 14 settlements. This group also expanded its control over approximately 150 square kilometers in the Sumy and Kharkov regions during the month, demonstrating a significant operational tempo.
Strategic Momentum and Shifting Priorities
Marochko emphasized the high pace of operations, stating, "We are maintaining a high pace in liberating occupied territories and establishing a buffer zone, according to Russian Defense Ministry data." He also noted that Russian forces took control of eight more settlements than in July, indicating an acceleration. The focus has shifted, with Russian troops now operating more actively and effectively in the Donetsk People’s Republic, a key area of strategic importance.
